Mary Beth Wilwerding, Executive Director
Hello, I am Mary Beth Wilwerding, RN, and I am the Executive Director here at Cancer Alliance of Nebraska. I am a graduate of the University of Nebraska, and received my nursing degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. My “calling” has always been to work with cancer patients, and my nursing career has always involved providing care and support to people with cancer. Cancer research has always been a focal point of my work, and I have been fortunate enough to have worked with CAN since the beginning in 1993.
We don’t get better at how we care for cancer patients if we don’t conduct research to find better ways to treat and ultimately cure cancer. I have been fortunate to have been involved in many clinical trials that have led to some of the cancer treatments we are currently using today. I trust that my experience in oncology nursing and as a research nurse compliment the organization mission and enhance cancer clinical trial participation in the communities we serve.
Erin Smith, Assistant Director
Hi my name is Erin Smith and I am the Assistant Program Director at Cancer Alliance of Nebraska. I have worked in clinical research since 2003 and began working with CAN in 2007. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management from Bellevue University. Prior to coming to CAN, I worked at Creighton University where I gained a wide array of clinical trial experience including pediatric infectious disease, pulmonary, cardiothoracic, and oncology. It’s incredibly gratifying to work in a field where we know the work we do improves the quality of healthcare and benefits patients all over the world.
